ABOUT

HANS YANG is an alumnus of the Iowa Young Writers Studio Residential Study Program, an extremely selective craft-based program based in Iowa City, Iowa. In June 2022, he studied "Stories and Their Shapes" in Iowa City, under Harvard writer and Iowa Writers Workshop MFA candidate Joan Li.He is an alumnus of the Adroit Summer Mentorship Program, an extremely selective mentor-based program where the best up-and-coming creative writers are mentored in an intimate 2-on-1 format. He studied Experimentalism and Absurdism under Georgetown faculty Andrew Gretes.His highly experimental hybrid-prose novel, "Fresh On the Boat", a black-comedy satirical examination into the intricacies of Chinese corporate culture and the "taboo" side of immigration earned him the title of 2023 National YoungArts Finalist in Novel. He was provided a full expenses paid visit to Miami, Florida, where he attended tailored masterclasses led by some of the most critically acclaimed writers in the United States, such as former National Poet Laureate Richard Blanco who served under the Obama administration, and Joan Morgan, Columbia University Dean of Journalism and hip-hop writer.He is the founder and the prose Editor-In-Chief of the Metaphysical Review, an international literary magazine showcasing exceptional and complex work from writers of all ages, providing specialized creative writing support curated by some of the best award-winning teen writers in the country to underprivileged communities, and partnering with organizations overseas to preserve the art of literary composition.He is the First Place poetry winner of the 2023 Columbia College Young Authors Writing Competition, for his disjointed, intense poem "HIVEMIND", a mockery of techno-orientalism in the 21st Century and BeyondSome of his biggest inspirations are Cowboy Bebop, Soft Science by Franny Choi, J. Cole's music, Maudlin House poems, Blade Runner 2049, Akira (the anime), Samurai Champloo, Frank Ocean, the movies Better Luck Tomorrow, Aftersun, Whiplash, and especially Lady Bird. Of course, there's more, but the dream is only so long.He's currently working on a long-length short story about fortune-telling and a marriage between law students, and with South Asian NYU Tisch film students on shorts on the absurdity in racism and socioeconomic oppression.
